Balto

Movies Online

Balto is a 1995 animated/live action film produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation animation studio, distributed by Universal Pictures, and originally released to movie theatres in 1995. Balto is based on a true story about the dog of the same name (voiced by Kevin Bacon), who helped save children from the diphtheria epidemic in the 1925 serum run to Nome. The live action portion of the films was shot in Central Park.

Balto is the final animated feature produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation animation studio, before Spielberg co-founded DreamWorks with David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg; most of the Amblimation staff was re-located to DreamWorks Animation. Universal Pictures would not release another feature-length animated film to theaters for over a decade, until Curious George in 2006. Similarly, it would be over a decade until Amblin Entertainment would produce another theatrically released animated film, which was 2006′s Columbia Pictures computer-animated feature film Monster House.

Reception

Balto holds a mixed rating of 46% by critics at Rotten Tomatoes, though only 11 reviews are counted. The film’s release was vastly overshadowed by the performance of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story, and, at best, did modest box office. Strong video sales lead to the release of two sequels: Balto II: Wolf Quest and Balto III: Wings of Change.

Historical differences

  • The sled run to get the medicine was actually a relay, and Balto was only the leader of the last team to carry the medicine to Nome. The longest and most hazardous distance was traveled by the team led by Togo.
  • Balto was never an outcast as shown by the film, but was instead born in a kennel owned by the famous musher Leonhard Seppala, where he grew up until he was deemed fit for pulling a sled. Seppala was also the owner of Togo, whom he personally used during the relay, Balto was instead used by one of his workers, Gunnar Kaasen.
  • Balto was not part wolf, but rather, was a Siberian Husky.

Babe

Babe is a 1995 Australian film narrated by Roscoe Lee Browne that tells the story of a pig who wants to be a sheep dog. The main animal characters are played by a combination of real and animatronic pigs and Border Collies. The film is based on the book The Sheep-Pig (known as Babe: The Gallant Pig in the U.S.) by Dick King-Smith, and later spawned a sequel called Babe: Pig in the City.

Babe was filmed in Robertson, New South Wales, Australia. The talking animal visual effects were done by Rhythm and Hues Studios.

Plot

The movie focuses on the story of a pig who is the runt of the litter. After his mother is taken away to be slaughtered by humans (or, as pigs think, to a “Pig Paradise”), his siblings drink from the mechanical milk machine, while he stands alone. This leads to him being picked out by two men to be in a “guess the weight” booth at a carnival. Farmer Hoggett, who forms a special bond with the pig once he looks at it, guesses the correct weight of 16 lbs, 2 oz. and wins the pig. Babe is brought to the farm and is allowed to stay with the dog, Fly, and her pups. After being told he isn’t allowed the same privileges as the dogs, such as entering the house and going out to the sheep field, he encounters a duck named Ferdinand. Ferdinand wakes the farm each morning by stealing the cock’s job and crowing. He tricks Babe into helping him destroy the alarm clock the Hoggetts have because it threatens his job. The two succeed, but end up waking the cat and covering the living room with paint. Babe gets in trouble with the dogs and is told to stay away from Ferdinand and the house. Babe then meets Maa, a resident sheep. She tells him what a nice pig he is and how he should watch out for some dogs called “wolves”. Fly’s puppies are then sold and Fly becomes upset. She decides to call Babe her son to help her through the heartbreak.

At Christmas, Mrs. Hoggett is dead set on having ham. Hoggett, however, has taken an unexplainable shine to Babe, and manages to convince his wife to keep him so they can show him in the fair. Instead of pork, they and their visiting family have duck instead. This is the last straw for the duck’s nerves, and Babe helps Ferdinand fly the coop so he won’t become dinner himself. Babe then accidentally opens the door to the sheep field and decides to venture in. Here, he witnesses two men trying to steal the sheep with the help of their dogs. He goes to alert Fly, her mate Rex, and Mr. Hoggett, who are able to prevent some of the sheep from being taken. Babe watches Fly herd the sheep and decides that he too wants to be a sheepdog.

The next day Mr. Hoggett sees Babe herd the hens outside into a straight line, separating the brown ones from the white ones. Impressed, he takes the pig to the sheep field with Fly and Rex. Rex feels threatened by Babe, especially when Hoggett tells Babe rather than Rex to herd the sheep. Taking advice from Fly to be rough, Babe charges in and bites Maa. This angers the sheep, so Babe decides to be nice and ask politely. The sheep then file out in a straight line, impressing Farmer Hoggett. That night, Rex attacks Fly for putting ideas in Babe’s head. Fly’s right-front leg is injured, and Rex is chained to the dog house and sedated. It is now Babe’s job to herd the sheep.

Hoggett soon considers entering Babe in the sheepdog trials. One morning, as Babe runs out to the field early he witnesses a pack of “wolf” dogs attacking the sheep. After scaring them away by ramming into their sides, he learns that Maa was fatally wounded and dies. Hoggett sees Babe standing over the dead sheep (with blood on his snout) and assumes the worst. As he prepares to shoot Babe, Fly tries to talk to the sheep for the first time to find out what happened. By barking, she manages to distract Mr. Hoggett long enough to allow Mrs. Hoggett to come out and tell how she heard that wild dogs killed six sheep on another farm.

When Mrs. Hoggett leaves town for a ladies’ meeting, Mr. Hoggett enters Babe in the sheepdog trials under the name “Pig”. That evening, the Hoggetts’ spoiled cat scratches Babe when he tries to talk to her, and she is thrown outside into the rain (under a roofed porch, but still cold). She sneaks back in and apologizes at first, but quickly turns the conversation into telling Babe how humans eat pigs. Fly confirms this when Babe runs to her for the truth. That night Babe runs away, but is found by Hoggett muddy and barely alive the next morning. Babe refuses to eat, so Hoggett gives him a drink in a bottle. He starts to sing “If I Had Words“, and this eventually leads to dancing for him (while the other animals watch through the windows). This restores Babe’s faith in the farmer.

After much debate as to whether Babe should be in the trials, the officials allow him to participate, as there is no rule saying the entrant must be a dog. However, the trial sheep refuse to listen to Babe. Rex runs back to the farm to get the secret password from the sheep. The sheep only consent to give Rex this password for Babe, when Rex promises to treat the sheep better in the future. He runs back to the trials and tells Babe the password. Fly and Rex then forgive each other for their fight earlier. Using the Sheep password, Babe is able to convince the sheep to do what he asks them to, and they perform flawlessly.

After getting five perfect 10.0s and the adoration of the crowd, Babe sits next to Hoggett, who delivers the famous line “That’ll do, Pig. That’ll do.”

The Lion King

The Lion King is a 1994 American animated feature film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, released in theaters on June 15, 1994 by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 32nd film in the Disney animated feature canon. The story, which was strongly influenced by the Shakespearean play Hamlet, takes place in a kingdom of anthropomorphic animals in Africa. The film was the highest grossing animated film of all time until the release of Finding Nemo (a Disney/Pixar computer-animated film). The Lion King still holds the record as the highest grossing traditionally animated film in history and belongs to an era known as the Disney Renaissance.

The Lion King is regarded as a landmark in animation, and received positive reviews from critics, who praised the film for its music and story. During its release in 1994, the film grossed more than $783 million worldwide, becoming the most successful film released that year, and it is currently the twenty-fourth highest-grossing feature film.

A musical film, The Lion King garnered two Academy Awards for its achievement in music and the Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with an original score by Hans Zimmer. Disney later produced two related movies: a sequel, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride; and a part prequel-part parallel, The Lion King 1½.

Plot

The Lion King takes place in the Pride Lands of Africa where a lion rules over the other animals as king. Rafiki (Robert Guillaume), a wise old mandrill, anoints Simba (cub by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, adult by Matthew Broderick), the newborn cub of King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Queen Sarabi (Madge Sinclair), and presents him to a gathering of animals at Pride Rock (“Circle of Life”).

Mufasa takes Simba on a tour of the Pride Lands, teaching him about the “Circle of Life“, the delicate balance affecting all living things. Taking advantage of the cub’s naive nature, Simba’s scheming uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) (who is very angry because Simba’s birth means that he’s no longer next in line to the throne) tells him about the elephant graveyard, a place where Mufasa has forbidden Simba to go. Simba asks his mother if he can go to the water-hole with his best friend, Nala (cub by Niketa Calame, adult by Moira Kelly). Their parents agree but only if Mufasa’s majordomo, the hornbill Zazu (Rowan Atkinson), goes with them. Simba and Nala elude Zazu’s supervision (“I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”) and go to the graveyard instead. There, the cubs are met by Shenzi, Banzai and Ed (Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin and Jim Cummings), spotted hyenas who try to kill them, but they are rescued by Mufasa.

On the way home, Mufasa orders Zazu to take Nala home so as to ‘teach his son a lesson’. Once left alone, Mufasa tells his son how very disappointed he is in him and how he put both Nala and his lives in danger. He further explains to Simba that being brave doesn’t mean to go looking for danger, and reveals he was scared he might have lost him. Having reached an understanding, they play together in the fields, where Simba asks his father if they will always be together. Mufasa tells him that the Kings of the Past are among the stars in the sky. They will be there to guide him and, when Mufasa’s time comes, so will he.

Meanwhile, Scar gains the loyalty of the hyenas by claiming that if he becomes king, they’ll “never go hungry again” (“Be Prepared“). During the song, Scar tells the hyenas that for this to happen they must kill Mufasa and Simba, thus establishing his plan of regicide.

Some time later, Scar lures Simba into a gorge for a “surprise from his father” while the hyenas create a wildebeest stampede. Alerted by Scar, Mufasa races to rescue Simba from the stampede. He saves his son but is left clinging to the edge of a steep cliff. Scar, instead of helping Mufasa, flings his brother into the stampede below. Simba sees his father fall and rushes down the cliff after him, only to find him dead. Scar convinces the young cub that he was responsible for his father’s death and recommends that he flee from the Pride Lands. Scar once again sends Shenzi, Banzai and Ed to kill Simba but he escapes. Scar informs the pride that both Mufasa and Simba were killed and that he is assuming the throne as the next in line. Scar proclaims that “this is the dawning of a new era, in which lion and hyena come together”, thus allowing the hyenas into the Pride Lands.

In a distant desert, Simba is found unconscious by Timon and Pumbaa (Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella), a meerkat-warthog duo who adopt and raise the cub under their worry-free philosophy (“Hakuna Matata”). When Simba has grown into an adult he is discovered by Nala, who tells him that Scar has turned the Pride Lands into a barren wasteland. She asks Simba to return and take his place as king but Simba refuses, still believing he caused his father’s death. Simba shows Nala around his home and the two begin to fall in love (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight”). Nala, however, tells Simba that she does not understand why he will not return to Pride Rock and they end up in a quarrel. Rafiki arrives and persuades Simba to return to the Pride Lands, aided by the appearance of the ghost of Mufasa.

Once back at Pride Rock, Simba (with Timon, Pumbaa and Nala) is horrified to see the condition of the Pride Lands. Timon and Pumbaa create a diversion, allowing Simba and Nala to sneak past the hyenas guarding Pride Rock. After seeing his mother Sarabi struck by Scar for criticizing him, Simba announces his return. In response, Scar tells the pride that Simba was responsible for Mufasa’s death and corners Simba at the edge of Pride Rock. As Simba dangles over the edge of Pride Rock, Scar proudly reveals to Simba that he was actually responsible for Mufasa’s death. Enraged, Simba leaps up and pins Scar to the ground, forcing him to admit the truth to the pride.

Atop Pride Rock’s peak, Simba corners Scar. To gain Simba’s mercy, Scar blames everything on the hyenas but Shenzi, Banzai and Ed overhear this betrayal. Simba demands that Scar go into exile. Scar pretends to leave but turns to attack Simba, resulting in a final duel. Simba triumphs over his uncle by kicking him over a low cliff. Scar survives the fall but finds himself surrounded by the now-resentful hyenas, who attack and kill him. Simba and Nala become the new king and queen of the Pride Lands. The film concludes with the Pride Lands turning green with life again and Rafiki presenting Simba and Nala’s newborn cub as “The Circle of Life” continues.

On one journey, Will’s father, Jack, hits a patch of thin ice and falls into the strong river below, and almost pulls his dogs in with him. When Will, in an attempt to pull his father out, gets caught in the rope, Jack cuts it, allowing the dogs to escape, and pull Will away. Unfortunately, Jack’s action causes his own death. After this, Will must provide for his family. In order to save his family from financial ruin, Will decides to enter a dog sled race. His mother wants Will to use part of the prospective $10,000 race winnings for college, but Will just wants to save the farm. With the aid of Indian handyman Ned Dodd, Will begins to train for the race.

But the rich mogul underwriting the race, J.W. Harper, doesn’t want Will to enter, thinking the competition too arduous and too dangerous for such a young boy. To Will’s aid comes yellow journalist Harry Kingsley, who convinces Harper to permit Will to enter the race. But Harry also has his own agenda — he sees a great story in Will and thinks it will sell newspapers and advance his journalistic career. With his father’s best dog Gus at the head of his dog team, Will is ready and determined to win the race. But Will discovers that winning the race is only half his battle. Dealing with the petty and malevolent human beings involved in the race — in particular, the egotistical Swedish champion Borg Guillarson and the wealthy gambler Angus McTeague — prove to be as much of a challenge to his mettle than any natural obstacles Will might encounter.

Man’s Best Friend

Movies Online

Man’s Best Friend is a 1993 American horror movie starring Ally Sheedy and Lance Henriksen and directed by John Lafia.

Plot

Dr. Jarret (Lance Henriksen) genetically engineers a security system, which he calls Max, by taking a Tibetan Mastiff dog and genetically splicing in the genes of other animals to give it their traits. Max gets released from the lab by reporter Lori Tanner (Ally Sheedy), and adopts her as his new master. She doesn’t realize that Max is killing anyone around her he views as a threat to her or as competition for her affections. When he believes Tanner has betrayed him after Jarret finds them, she becomes his next target.

During the movie, Max demonstrated several abilities resulting from the genetic manipulation, including:

  • Extremely acidic urine that was able to damage a fire hydrant
  • Sufficient jaw strength to gnaw through a metal brake line
  • Swallowing a cat whole after climbing a tree with retractable claws and catlike agility
  • Ability to change his appearance to blend into his own surrounding environment much like chameleons are incorrectly believed to do
  • Ability to run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour, and jump at abnormal heights for a dog
  • Extraordinary intelligence for a dog. for example, Max conceals the body of a postal worker to protect himself.
  • Dr. Jarret, Max’s sinister creator, claims the animal has enhanced sight, hearing, strength and stamina

Much of the movie uses tongue-in-cheek humor as a narrative device. For example, the romance music as Max woos (or possibly rapes) the local Lassie The Dog lookalike, and the children’s flippant reaction to Max’s ingestion of the local ginger cat. Several of Max’s victims are portrayed as cruel or inept.

The movie hints at a sequel when the progeny of the late-Max and “Lassie” contains one ill-tempered mutant.

Cultural references

This movie is also known to be shown on the cult film Friday. Being watched by John Witherspoon’s character, the scene shown is of a mailman being chased by the genetically-engineered dog.
